Shahril eyes elusive MJHL top scorer’s award

KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School-Thunderbolt forward Mohd Shahril Saabah was gutted when he failed to bag the top scorer’s award in the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) last season despite plundering 15 goals.

The award went to Universiti Kuala Lumpur’s (UniKL) defender Mohd Zulhairi Hashim, who bagged 18 penalty corner goals.

So Shahril is on a mission to grab the coveted award in the Under-19 tournament this year.

US withdraw from Olympic qualifier

COLORADO SPRINGS: Injuries, job conflicts and player retirements have prompted the United States to withdraw from the London Olympic men’s hockey qualification tournament next month in India.

USA Field Hockey announced on Tuesday that the choice to pull out of the event from Feb 18-26 at New Delhi was made in the long-term interest of the team after consultation with coach Chris Clements.

The Americans were selected to attend the event after finishing fifth in last year’s Pan American Games in Mexico.

Crunch time for MBPJ in two important matches this week

KUALA LUMPUR: Two crucial matches this week may well decide whether Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) finish in the top-three in Division One of the Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL) .

MBPJ face former double champions Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil tomorrow and defending overall champions Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI)-Thunderbolt at the Taman Daya Stadium in Johor Baru on Sunday.

MBPJ have three points from the first two matches after losing 2-1 to reigning league champions Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) and thrashing Tunku Besar School of Tampin 7-0.
